Music Marketing Post #1

Hi! Last week, we were assigned a music marketing project. The project consists of getting assigned a genre, three song options, creating a music video, and then creating a brand and a marketing campaign for them as a new artist or band. My group and I were assigned the genre of pop/throwbacks. We were then sent an email with three song options from our genre.

The first task to complete was a note chart. We had to first learn about the music market as a whole before diving into this project. One of the most difficult things for us with the notes chart was finding production companies that had easy-to-access information and two artists in the company that fit our genre. It's a lot easier said than done. We had finally found two music production companies; we landed on Universal Music Group and Sony Music Productions. Now we have to start the research. Once we had named our artists and production company, it was smooth sailing. We were able to easily find tons of information and fill in our note chart. We found many useful websites that had fully analyzed our artist marketing, so it was very easy for us to learn about music marketing. Overall, the most difficult part of the note chart was finding production companies with the criteria we needed. This is our completed note chart:

Next, we had to start planning our music video. This was challenging as we couldn't decide on a song. None of us were really connecting with any of the songs we were given, but we had to make the best of what we had. We decided on one and started brainstorming. Coming up with a music video idea was hard. None of us felt like we were creative. It all felt boring and like it wouldn't be good enough. We decided to mix story-telling and promotional video. We were going to tell the story of a girl waiting for a date that never showed up, as well as two of the girls in the band singing with various shots, angles, and lighting. So we started to draw out our story board. Having our story board so detailed was really beneficial when we began to shoot. Here's a look at our story board!
We also started to develop an idea of what we wanted our brand to be. We created a Word document and just started to type and brainstorm things our brand would do to market themselves. Once we had a basic idea, we created a proposal. We've only done one or two slides, but once we completely finish our ideas on the document, it will be a smooth process to transfer that information on to our presentation. Our idea was to create a boy-band vibe, but with girls. We think that will be engaging for our target audience of teens and match the vibe of our genre or song. Coming up with a name has been difficult. As none of us feel we are too creative, we've kind of come to a bump in the road with the name. After bouncing ideas off each other, we pretty much just settled on a name and figured the name was important, but we can't waste all this time on it and need to get started on our marketing. We also thought that this was a younger group, so they were going to be utilizing a lot of social media and technology. Here is our document with some of our ideas:

So far, I'd say we're off to a pretty good start. We're collaborating a lot and bouncing ideas off each other, which I think is great. Sometimes we do have different opinions, but in the end, I think that is helping us, as it is providing diversity to our project and making it less boring. We have all of the ideas; all we need to do is put them together in preparation, and our project will be a success.
